Free Night!

While I am usually saying “Thank goodness it’s Thursday” every week, today I have extra reason to be grateful: after a super productive first few days at my new client, I was able to duck out early and catch a 2:30pm flight instead of a 7pm flight – putting me home at 7pm instead of midnight. FREE NIGHT! Glorious. My plans for the night though? Not so impressive. I initially wanted to try to squeeze in some gym time. I did a weight lifting workout this morning (day 2 of Kara Goucher’s cross-training routine), and figured I’d follow it up …

The Purpose of Rest Days

A few weeks ago, I was talking to my mom about her half marathon training. It was Wednesday, and she hadn’t had a chance to do a training run yet for the week, so she told me she planned to run one of the “weekday” runs on Thursday, the other “weekday” run on Friday, and then the “long weekend” run on Saturday. Sounds like she’s sticking with the plan, right? No, no, no! Getting back into a routine

This has been a strange week for me. Theodora wrote an interesting post last night about the importance of finding a routine – but this week, my routine has been way more disrupted than usual. First, there was the food poisoning. while in November I was pretty much getting a workout in every day (sometimes two or three in a day, if I opted to do multiple shorter ones instead of one big weight lifting or cardio session), that all fell apart on Wednesday when I went down for the count. Though it felt totally bizarre to not do anything, …

First World Problems

For those of you who aren’t (un)lucky enough to be on my IM list and constantly getting random links and quotes that I think are funny, you probably don’t know about two of my favorite humor websites. The first is called White Whine, and the second is actually a Twitter feed called First World Life. Both sites share kvetches and complaints that, when you really think about them, are only problems in our own spoiled first world minds… though I must admit, sometimes I’ve read a quote and realized that I once thought the same thing! A few funny examples: …

Running vs Weight Lifting

Several of my girlfriends declared September to be “Improve Yourself Month.” Each of us picked a certain goal for the month, and we’re checking in on a weekly basis to get support. My goal for the month was, of course, workout-oriented: to run at least 10 miles each week. It’s funny how little 10 miles a week is, compared to when I was doing a marathon every weekend in peak season. I reasoned that it still feels like an easy run for me to bang out 4-5 miles, so if I just do that two or three times a week, …
