Summer Sunday in New York

Theodora_And_Laura_NYC

This was a really fabulous summer weekend. Although I’ve spent a lot of time on planes (today is day five of taking a flight every single day), all that flying has helped me be exactly where I need to be, even when I live thousands of miles away. Yesterday, that was in Manhattan, where I got to spend an amazing afternoon/evening with Theodora. I got to New York midday Sunday, just in time for the Pride Parade, which was going right by Theodora’s apartment. I knew that the traffic would be a mess, so I took the bus/subway from the …

Travel Thursday: How Social Media Affects Perceptions

Jack_Shafer_Twitter_Resignation_Demands

Ah, Thursdays. The day I try to come home, but am often thwarted. Last night, I ended up stuck in Dallas overnight, so you’re getting my travel Thursday thoughts on a Friday this time 😉 It’s always interesting to see people’s reaction when I tell them I work in the airline industry – it’s not really an industry that has many fans these days! And a few months ago, when David Dao was kicked off United Express 3411, people were especially opinionated in their belief that the airlines are evil and out to screw us over any way they can. …

Dilbert_Flight_Overbooked

TGI Flyday! I’m in flight and on my way home for the first time in nearly ten days, and I’m so excited to get back home tonight. This is one of those nights where I don’t want to get home a second later than planned – I am just so excited to get back to my very own bed, especially after sleeping in a twin XL all weekend back at college 😉 Ever since the much-publicized United Express incident back in April, when David Dao was violently kicked off a flight, I’ve had friends about to fly mention in passing …

Travel Thursday: Why Flying Is Getting Less Comfortable

Extra_Go_Sherpa_Shirt_JetBlue

This morning, the Economist published a piece on why flying in the summer is so hellish. Their words, not mine, though I agree with that sentiment! As someone who typically flies 45-50 weeks a year, I really dislike flying over summer break and any holiday periods, when airports get congested with infrequent travelers who don’t know the basic rules/etiquette. But, as the Economist points out, there’s more to it than just higher loads: summer thunderstorms cause many delays and cancellations, whose resolution is thwarted by the aforementioned high loads. If one flight is canceled, there isn’t much extra capacity to easily get everyone …

Ready for the Bolder Boulder

10K_PR

My current project is in Florida. The client is great; the work is really interesting; and the location is unbeatable. The commute, though, is where I pay the price for all that. Palm Beach is a fairly seasonal airport that does a lot of traffic in the winter, and when I was here in February, the flight times weren’t too bad. But now that seasonal service has ended, my best bet to get here is to take an 8am two-leg flight that doesn’t have me landing until 4pm. I can certainly work in flight, but a whole day spent up in the …
