Race Report: ING New York City Marathon (Part 1)

I didn’t sleep well the night before the race, waking up multiple times throughout the night. When my alarm finally went off, I didn’t feel my best – and that was compounded by the fact that my upper back/neck was super tight. Clearly I had been stressing out a lot more than I thought if it was enough to aggravate my old muscle injury! Fortunately, one night of stressing wasn’t enough to put me into agonizing pain, and I was able to do some stretching and self-massage in order to ease it and be good to go. Even better, I …

Night Before the Race: New York City Marathon

This year, like every other time I’ve run the New York City Marathon, I’ll be writing my recap in multiple posts. This marathon is too amazing for me not to share every single detail! But this year, unlike every other time I’ve run the New York City Marathon, I will be actually completing the multiple posts, instead of just leaving you hanging. Hooray! (And in bonus good news, I just found a whole bunch of almost-complete-but-never-published race reports on my old 2009 netbook, so perhaps you’ll even get the 2009 and 2010 New York City Marathon race reports sometime soon.) The …

Thank You!

Today was one of the most magical days of my life, and it’s mostly due to all my incredible friends and family who supported me on such a beautiful day. Of course a full race report is to come, but the short version is my legs are fine (“after all, they are mine” / I actually didn’t listen to any Fun during the race; just the fun of the spectators!) while my face is insanely sore from smiling so hard all day. I can’t possibly name all of the wonderful people who encouraged me, but know that your cheers, calls, …

Marathon Motivation Tip: Run It For Someone Else

I’ve often been asked at expos and night-before-the-race speaking engagements for last-minute tips. At those times, your training is done. Sorry for all you procrastinators right now (believe me that I am sorry for I am one of you!), but doing sprints the night before the marathon is not going to fix any lack of training 🙂 One part of training that runners often neglect is brain training – and it’s honestly too late to do much on that now either. (This article gives a great overview of what I mean by that – lots of work needed!) But there is …

Race Report: Yonkers Marathon

I ran the Yonkers Marathon on Sunday, September 29, but have been a bit backlogged with writing the report! The Yonkers Marathon didn’t even get off to a very auspicious start in the days leading up to the race. Organized by NYC Runs (so presumably targeting New York City runners), the race start was right at the base of the Yonkers train station, and many runners planned to take the Metro North train from Manhattan. While the location was convenient, the timing was not – in the early morning on weekends, the trains run every hour to arrive at :51, …
