Are “Fitness Cults” a Bad Thing?

Today I went to a Fly90 class (that’s a fancy way of saying a 90 minute spin class), and honestly wasn’t having a great ride. The instructors were amazing – Ryan Makely is my absolute favorite New York instructor, and he was joined by Danielle Devine (who’s also very popular, though I had never taken her before) and three instructors from the London branch of Flywheel. Cool! But I was just exhausted, and could tell right from the first song that it wasn’t going to be a strong ride for me. The energy of the room was amazing, but nothing …

Citibiking in the Snow: Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop

Snowy NYC

I may not have made a New Year’s resolution, but I did set a goal for myself over my Christmas break: to take the subway as little as possible, and take Citibike instead. So far in two weeks of being home in NYC, I’ve taken the subway only once (when I went out in a party dress on New Year’s Eve), and cabs only twice (once home from NYE, and once when I needed to get a whole ton of boxes and moving supplies home from Uhaul). At $100 (or $50 if you caught the Gilt City deal like I …

A Very New York Christmas

On Christmas Eve, I woke up early to go for breakfast with my bff and his girlfriend, and we headed for one of my favorite places – Le Pain Quotidien. Race Report: ING New York City Marathon (Part 3)

After crossing the halfway point of the NYC Marathon, I was still flying high and feeling good. The photographers kept capturing tons of pictures of me grinning like a banshee, and one thing I forgot to mention in part 2 of my recap was how I was tearing up at least once every single mile. I could not believe how unbelievably lucky I was to get to run my 100th marathon in my hometown, with thousands upon thousands of cheering fans every step of the way. Most were strangers, but every so often I’d see someone I knew in the …

Race Report: ING New York City Marathon (Part 2)

When I left off with Part 1, I was crying at the start as New York, New York played over the loudspeakers. Not a bad cliffhanger, huh? It took a little while for me to cross the start since I was toward the back of my wave, but that was just fine with me – it meant more time to sing along with Frank Sinatra and hopefully get my tears over with before starting to run. However, it did not apparently give me the time to actually think about what I was doing – because I was at least a …
