My first marathon training run (or, how I survived my first hangover)

Last night, Kelly’s Sports Bar in the East Village ran a special: 80 cent jagermeister shots and 80 cent Newcastle pints. Ridiculous! This started at 9, and when we got there at 11, it was absolutely packed. Within five minutes of our arrival, they ran out of beer (no, I was not responsible for that – in fact, I had not even managed to get a bartender’s attention yet). People cleared out pretty quickly, but we decided to stay and enjoy the jager. The place was far from empty, but it was definitely more comfortable than before, and we even …

Drunk on a plane

This was written last night on a legal pad and typed up today when I had time to figure out my handwriting. Thanks to a certain someone who claims that I am way too healthy and don’t drink enough, I thought I’d write up a post of my random thoughts while drunk on the Delta Shuttle back to New York. How did I get drunk, you may ask? Well, part of that is due to my aforementioned healthy nature. Today I was an exceptionally healthy traveler. for breakfast, I picked up a 168 calorie smoothie (I just started to write …

This post will be the first in an ongoing series listing races I’d like to run someday. I’m not necessarily registering and booking my flights, but these are races that just sound great. These posts won’t be long or really significant, and they won’t replace the regular daily posts, but they’ll be around. According to a Forbes article, “Every year 59 pedigreed châteaus with names ranging from Lafite Rothschild to Léoville Las Cases host 9,000 runners who set off from the quaint town of …

Fitness Break: Wine Tasting in Boston

Vanilla posted today about a new recovery drink, which he nicknamed “Cabern-ade Sauvignon.” This sounds like a brilliant idea to me. After all, we learned a few months ago that beer helps you recover faster than just drinking water, so why not wine? Okay, now that the obligatory “connection to fitness” is out of the way, I can post what I really wanted to write about: a story about this fantastic wine store I visited in Boston yesterday. While lying around on the couch watching movies (we saw 5 in two days… impressive, huh? Actually just really, really lazy) and …

Hangovers and Running In Their Wake

I suppose I should have posted this on Tuesday morning, but I just discovered it today, and thought it might still be helpful for the weekend. All about hangovers, from Diet Detective. I’m fortunate enough not to ever get hungover. Some refer to it as a superpower. In any case, it’s a helpful trait to have on weekends when I want to go running but I drank a ridiculous amount the night before. In fact, this summer I did an 8 mile race the morning after attending a microbrew festival in Albany, NY, at which you were given a punch …
