Top (Heavy) Chef

In my old job, I used to complain that it made me fat because I had to eat out all the time. I hated that I was seen as picky if I tried to modify orders or get just a salad – it sucked. However, an article in the Times profiles Padma Lakshmi from Top Chef. While I watch Top Chef every week and drool over the delicious eats, I never before considered the fact that she doesn’t just have a lucky metabolism – she actually has to eat all those fatty foods! I mentioned last week that I was …

Running marathons in 50 states is expensive!

This is certainly not a personal finance blog, but I’ll admit that I’ve been struggling a bit lately with managing my money. It’s not that I’m deep in debt or unable to pay rent or anything like that, but I’ve been spending outside my means – for dumb reasons. Looking at my spending more carefully, the biggest culprit is going out to eat. Until a few months ago, going out to eat (on my own dime, not counting business meals) was a rare event. What Not To Do Before the Marathon

Despite my recent weight loss, I’m not very strict about my diet… until two days before a marathon. With 16 marathons under my belt, I’ve had my share of unfortunate incidents like begging for a spectator to let me in their house to use the bathroom when I did my second marathon. This week, as part of Runners’ Lounge’s Take it and Run Thursday, I’ll be sharing my “Eat This, Not That” list of what to eat and what not to eat in the …

Healthy Meal: Buffalo Chicken and Ranch Dip

Lately, I’ve been DVRing this new show on Lifetime that I heard about: Cook Yourself Thin. It’s basically a cross between Queer Eye and a cooking show: every show they feature one woman who wants to drop a dress size, ask her what her favorite foods are, and then show her how to cook those recipes while cutting the calorie count way down and bumping the nutrition way up. Basically, it’s what I’ve been doing for years with Rachael Ray’s recipes! A lot of stuff is kind of obvious or standard for dieters (switch to low fat cheeses, bulk out …

Gotta find my purpose before it’s too late

So the thing about unemployment is that it’s really a lot more up and down than I’ve been making it sound. There are some times when it is kind of nice to be able to sit at Starbucks and wait for Boyfriend even if he’s running late, because my schedule is flexible. And it’s definitely kind of nice that I’m getting paid for doing nothing. (I just have to try to enjoy that while knowing that soon I will not be able to get paid even if I want something to do). Anyway, I just want to go on the …
