Sweating Through My Business Formal: The Night Before the Marathon

Today has been one of the most stressful days I’ve had in a while. I woke up and immediately checked the flight loads for Boyfriend’s and my standby leg of our Nashville trip – plenty of seats available. I left for work at 6:30 AM, enjoying the beautiful sunshine and already warm temperatures, and arriving with plenty of time to make up for leaving early. Then it all went downhill. Around 9 AM, more bookings started. There were a few passengers who didn’t make it on time to the morning flight and were getting pushed back to mine, and a …

Weekend woes

The Country Music Marathon this weekend will be my first time flying non-rev (meaning non-revenue meaning it’s free to standby because I work for the airline). Unfortunately, we don’t fly to Nashville, so Boyfriend and I are taking a late afternoon flight to Richmond, and then we bought cheap tickets ($100) on another airline to go from Richmond to Nashville. Marathon Monday

I spent the day avoiding blogs and the news, because I wanted to be sure to to hear how the Boston Marathon turned out until I had the chance to watch. New York does not celebrate Patriots’ Day (the alternate name for what runners know as Marathon Monday), so I had to work today, but I DVRed the live coverage on Universal Sports and planned to cozy up and watch from bed tonight. Despite not getting into work until 10 AM due to subway delays (not my fault) and some oversleeping (oops), I still managed to be home by 7 …

Today I got to fly over Manhattan!!!

What I mean is, I, Laura, got to fly a plane over the island of Manhattan!!! Okay, so maybe it wasn’t the real Manhattan, and maybe it was just a simulation, but the instructor was still pretty pissed when I narrowly missed the Statue of Liberty! To explain: while en route to Orlando for training, my new manager called me with an interesting proposition: how would I like to try out the flight simulator used for pilot training? I told him I would love to, and we arranged to meet at the training facility at 4 PM. This gave me …

I miss my American diet

I’m not giving the South Beach diet another try till I get back to the states… but it’s a really good thing I made that decision. For every meal since I’ve gotten here, the table has been set with:-A basket of bread (not whole wheat, either)-A tub of butter-A jar of Polish mayonnaise-A platter of extremely high fat sliced meats (like, half the slice is marbled white fat) I haven’t seen a fruit or veggie since arriving. Oh wait – yes, I have. It’s the one other dish on the table, whose name translates to “cold feet.” You take some …
