Hello from Amsterdam!

That’s right, it’s jetsetting time again, and I’m here on a quick layover on my way to Brussels. Zythos Beer Festival, here I come! The flight from Washington to Amsterdam was mostly uneventful, with the exception of meal service. I had requested a gluten-free meal – I have a colleague who swears by gluten-free meals for the health value, since they tend to cut out all the “dry carbs” (i.e., potatoes, rice, pasta, bread, etc) that plague most cheap/mass produced food. Unfortunately, my meal preference didn’t go into the system in time, so there was no special meal on board …

How travel changes you

I’ve come across a few articles lately that are along the lines of “how travel/living abroad” changed my life. I particularly enjoyed this one by Crystal, which focused on the money saving tips she picked up by living overseas for four years. However, there are a lot of different ways you grow and change by traveling, and I decided it’s time that I reflected on how my travels have affected my own life. I was having an email discussion with some friends about what kind of travels we’ve tried or would be willing to try, and solo travel was one …

Functional fitness

Last night at our company bowling event, there was some good and bad stuff going from a health perspective. On the good side: My usual MO is to just (attempt to) pick up balls one at a time until I find one that is light enough for me to hold. I normally end up bowling with one of those kiddie-colored pink or orange balls that are only 7 or 8 pounds, since that’s all my puny arms could lift. Last night, the very first ball I picked up was comfortable, even light-feeling. I turned it over, surprised that a dark …

Typical day in the life of a consultant

I realized this morning that it doesn’t feel like the week really started until I’ve been on a plane. Yes, for all my complaints about delayed flights and how hard the travel lifestyle can be, I missed being up in the air. Fortunately, this morning I headed back to LaGuardia and was welcomed back by the TSA with open arms (and groping hands). I guess I’m just not content without my Monday morning patdown! Today I had training all day, which was capped off with a delightful happy hour at our hotel. Delightful in large part because it was held …

They Know Who I Am (TKWIA)

In the frequent flyer world, there is a recurring joke about the people who think that they are entitled to everything and the moon – we call them DYKWIAs, or “Do You Know Who I Am”s. I try my best in my travels to never be one of them. But tonight? They Knew Who I Was. My coworkers all had much earlier flights than I did, but I shared a ride to the airport with them anyway. My meetings for the day were done, so I planned to just do the rest of my work from the airport, since it …
