Race Report: Bay to Breakers

Chris said it best when he stated “I could not really call this a race report since B2B is more about the event and less about the actual run.” Also, I probably can’t really call this a race report since I didn’t register, I didn’t once run, I didn’t get a time, and I didn’t cross the finish line. But ignoring those minor technicalities, we’ll forge onward. The night before the race, we decided to cop out and pick up sheets at Mervyn’s (which is like the California version of Sears) and make togas as costumes. Yeah, we’re pretty lame. …

Marathon Goals

Yesterday Nitmos posted about how to set your race goals. I don’t think I necessarily fit into any of those categories, but I totally agree with Viper’s comment, “I’m more of the pick-an-arbitrary-time-that-sounds-good-and-be-pissed-off-when-I-don’t-beat-it-even-if-I-PR goal setter.” Boozers unite! I’ve heard that for your first marathon, your goal should just be to finish, and you shouldn’t set any goals beyond that. Pshaw. I’m going with 4:15 as my goal. That’s a 9:44 mile, which sounds a little slow, but in my only >20 mile run, I did 9:55. I’m thinking I was not well-rested and not well-fueled when I did that, so …

Bay to Breakers: Quick Version

Short version: I did not see the Pacific, and instead got my first DNF. Took a stiletto to the instep, and then a half mile later I took a 5’10” guy and however much he weighs to the head, then went unconscious and woke up on the side of the road with well-intentioned drunkards throwing water on me. I really hope this does not cause any problems for my first marathon next weekend. (I promise, promise, promise I will post full reports for both this and my Providence half before I attempt my full this weekend.)

I was trying to think of a San Francisco song lyric to put here but all I can think of is the Rice a Roni song

Off to San Francisco for the weekend! I’m staying with my old high school friend Mike and we’re doing the Bay to Breakers 12K on Sunday, which should be a lot of fun. Chris says there are lots of hills in San Francisco, and has been training on hills a lot for the race. Me? Well, Central Park has a few small hills, but I’ve been doing most of my running on the West Side Highway now which is flat, flat, flat. It might be a bit of a rude awakening, but I hear that the Vermont City Marathon gets …

It’s officially prep time!

It’s official. I have signed up for my first marathon. In less than two weeks, I will be in Burlington, VT (home of the Ben & Jerry’s Factory) and about to make the ultimate leap from non-runner to marathoner in the Keybank Vermont City Marathon! I’m super psyched. At lunch today, my manager wanted to know how fast Oprah ran (4:29), because he says if I can’t beat her it’s pathetic and he’d laugh at me. Pretty high pressure! I told him going 26 miles is much harder than you think. He said he could easily walk it in 6 …
