“And then you go over the glacier…” (Night Before the Marathon)

Last night I could not sleep at all, I was so excited. This was bad news for my pre-race prep, as two nights before is considered the crucial night to rest up. I tried to go to bed at 9 PM, but couldn’t fall asleep until around 10:30, and was then woken up at 11 by a friend calling to tell me a song for my playlist. I then woke up at 6 AM to eat another oat bran french toast breakfast at the Marriott, pick up the rental car and my loyal supporter Kristen, and hit the road. We …

2 days before the marathon!

In true RazzDoodle fashion, here is a bulleted list of my Friday. Ate the most perfect carb-loading marathon-prep breakfast ever. Whole wheat french toast, dipped in egg whites (low cholesterol!), then dipped in rolled oats, with low sugar (but none of that fake sugar crap) maple syrup. Topped with fresh strawberries and bananas. I did not make this recipe up – it’s from the Marriott, if you can believe it! Awesome. Went to Marathon Sports and picked up my very first stick of Body Glide. Told the cashier, the salesperson, and half the store that I was running my first …

Keep the calories fairly normal (maybe a tad bit higher than my usual daily goal), but increase the carbs just slightly (since I tend to go high-protein low-carb most days… certainly not all-out Atkins-style, but …

I really want to slap my manager right now

He keeps quoting celebrity marathon times and telling me I’m pathetic if I can’t beat them, and then he’s putting down people with “slow” times (his definition of slow is any time more than 4:30). He thinks he could do a marathon in less than 6 hours with absolutely no training. This from a guy who considers 3 miles a long run. “A 6 hour finish is about a 14 minute pace, which is like 4.3 MPH. Come on, I walk that all the time on the treadmill and I don’t get tired. That is totally pathetic that people train …

The upcoming ice cream is giving me cold feet

I started getting scared this morning when I read Julie’s comments on my post yesterday about my marathon excuses, and how the VCM can really kick your butt. Then I got an e-mail this afternoon from the race organizers: Hi Runners, We’re only a few days away from marathon weekend! You are receiving this email because you are a registered Marathoner. It goes on from there with some logistics but oh my gosh, I am a registered marathoner! What did I get myself into? If you kind of cough as you say the word “registered,” it’s even scarier. I’m starting …
