Workout Recap: 9/8-9/17

I need to get into a regular Saturday cadence in logging my workouts! Here goes for the last week and a half… Thursday 9/8:  I spent Wednesday night traveling back to Dallas from Ithaca, and didn’t get to my hotel in Dallas until midnight. Thursday I wasn’t feeling a workout at all, but forced myself to at least do two quick miles on the treadmill. First mile was 7:53 pace the whole way; the second mile, I sped up each quarter mile so that my split paces were 7:27, 7:15, 6:57, and 6:30. This was really easy and fun – …

Workout Recap: 8/29 – 9/7

Even though my September goal is about cutting back on my email checking, I’ve really enjoyed sharing my workout log on my blog every week in August, so I’d like to keep doing that. I’m not sure what day of the week this will typically come (Saturdays?) but for now, here’s a midweek update on the last week and a half: Monday 8/29: This should not have been a rest day, but it mostly was. I did, however, squeeze in a 10 minute biceps workout from Brit. I love how quick and focused Brit’s strength workouts are – they make me really …

August Goal Check In: Week 4

This week, my workouts were a little bit better than last. I unfortunately didn’t make much progress toward getting in lots of strength workouts, but I at least got the running workouts done successfully! Let’s check in on the week of 8/23-8/29 (week running Tuesday to Monday, since I last checked in on Monday): Tuesday: 4 mile tempo run, with splits of 8:57, 8:42, 8:20, and 7:54. I was so happy to get to change the pace every mile rather than die of boredom! At the time, I wished I could have gone faster, but yesterday I saw that I …

Hiking Report: Mohawk Lakes

Upper_Mohawk_Lake

I arrived at the Bivvi last night, super excited for this year’s Gociety Mountain Gathering. However, after a drink at the bar and another at Breckenridge Brewery, I nearly got talked into trading today’s summit of Father Dyer Peak for a late morning hike to Mohawk Lakes. But I really wanted to do a strenuous hike, so I forced myself to get up early for the Father Dyer hike. As luck would have it, we ended up at Mohawk Lakes anyway! The plan was to meet at 6am at Spruce Creek Trailhead. However, after hanging out there for a few minutes and …

Book Review: Sweat Equity

We’ve all lamented how much money we spend on fitness. Running is supposed to be free – all you need is a pair of sneakers and you’re good to go, right? But I will fully admit to spending a lot of money on fitness – from clothing and gear, to race entry fees, to my beloved Classpass subscription. Sweat Equity: Inside the New Economy of Mind and Body, by Jason Kelly, takes a fascinating look at the business of fitness. Even though I’m not looking to invest in any fitness companies anytime soon, I was captivated by all the behind the …
