The Value of Varying Workouts

drawchange_5k_female_overall

This morning, my friend Theodora wrote a thought-provoking post on why specificity matters in workouts. I read her post, and I also read the linked articles that provide more scientific background. But I have to say, despite all the science behind muscle confusion not working, I still love ClassPass, and think that the variety it provides is incredibly beneficial. Ultimately, whether or not specificity matters will come down to your goals. Theodora says, “If you don’t have specific goals, planning your workout schedule by whatever class is open works.” However, I’d like to question the definition of a “specific goal”, and …

October Goal: 20 ClassPass Gym Classes

not_preplanning_meals

We’re already a third of the way into October, but it took me till now to commit to a goal for the month. Things in my life just feel so strange and up in the air that I’ve been reluctant to commit to anything! Last weekend, Adam and I went to Atlanta for a long weekend visiting some friends. Last week, I slept in my own bed on weeknights for a change while helping out with a pro bono project at work. And this weekend, Adam and I took his son to Disneyland in California! We had an amazing time, but none …

I was grumping to Adam a lot about my rest day yesterday – I hate being inactive, and usually prefer to just vary my workout rather than taking actual rest days. Except I got too lazy …

Workout Recap: 9/18-9/24

This was a really strong week of workouts! I am starting to see significant progress in my running, and it feels fantastic. Sunday 9/18: Lazed around most of the day and felt pretty guilty about it, so just before bed I did a 15 minute bodyweight workout I made up as I went. 50 reps each of squats, plie squats, leg lifts, leg lift pulses, bridges, crunches, backups, and side leg lifts. Monday 9/19: Monday mornings are always tough, but this time I unexpectedly woke up about an hour before my 3:30am alarm and was fairly wide awake, so I headed …

Workout Recap: 9/8-9/17

I need to get into a regular Saturday cadence in logging my workouts! Here goes for the last week and a half… Thursday 9/8:  I spent Wednesday night traveling back to Dallas from Ithaca, and didn’t get to my hotel in Dallas until midnight. Thursday I wasn’t feeling a workout at all, but forced myself to at least do two quick miles on the treadmill. First mile was 7:53 pace the whole way; the second mile, I sped up each quarter mile so that my split paces were 7:27, 7:15, 6:57, and 6:30. This was really easy and fun – …
