Book Review: Jillian Michaels’ Slim For Life

I’ve recently become a total podcast addict. I listen while I’m getting ready in the morning (which is still only 20-30 minutes despite my new focus on my appearance), I listen while I’m driving (in Dallas), and I listen when I’m walking/taking the subway (in NYC). I’ve been plowing through podcasts like crazy, but lucky for me, one of my favorites has quite a library of archives – the Jillian Michaels podcast. For the last few months, Jillian has been talking a lot about a new book that she’s writing, Slim For Life. I’ve read several of Jillian’s books in …

To gym or not to gym?

This morning, I was catching up on an episode of the Biggest Loser (episode 7, for those of you who follow along), wherein some of the contestants lost the use of the gym for a week and had to make do without it. Bob and Jillian threw a hissy fit when that happened, talking all about how the gym was an integral part of getting in shape. In the end, they resorted to shoulder pressing lawn furniture, and they all seemed to lose a decent amount of weight that week (no spoilers from me about whether they won or not). …

Recently I’ve been trying to use my old standard tactic of setting short term goals to inspire me to lose weight. For example, I have my DIY fitness cruise coming up this weekend, which is a great reason to get in shape (so I can look good in a bikini onboard). However, even the short-term motivation just isn’t working these days. On Monday mornings, I have to get up at 5:30am to be out of the apartment by 6:15am for my flight to DC. My gym doesn’t open until 5:30am, and I prefer not to get up at 4:30am only …

More marathon advice inspired by The Biggest Loser

This morning at the gym, I watched the first half of the Biggest Loser Finale. I love the finale episodes – it’s always so fun to see exactly how far they’ve come! Though I really wish they’d do away with the contestants first appearing in those awful party outfits – the girls are always stuffed into their satin shiny dresses, while the men are wearing tight Euro-style suits… and I swear they don’t look that different than their before pictures! To me, the big reveal is when they change into their workout attired and I can compare them to the …

If you can dream it, you can do it

For the last two weeks, I’ve gotten really good about going to the gym. Amazing considering I was a slacker for the last 6 months or so (well, I did marathons, but I didn’t exercise at all besides those)! My new routine is to set my alarm for 6:15, snooze till 6:30, and be dressed and downstairs at the gym by 6:45. I’ve figured out how to get my favorite TV shows to play on my Droid, so I watch 30 minutes of whatever show I’m trying to catch up on (I am so behind!) while on the elliptical or …
