Early morning sprint

Just did a single quick mile on the treadmill. But when I say quick, I do mean quick. I started at an 8:00 pace, which actually felt really easy, so I kept kicking it up. 7:30 and 7:03 also felt pretty relaxing, and it wasn’t until I dropped to 6:40 that I felt like I was going fast. I ended up finishing the whole thing in 7:08. I know it was only one mile, but WOW! Maybe with some hard work I can become a speed demon. However, since my races of choice tend to be 10 milers and half-marathons, …

Boston Marathon (Spectator’s) Report

Everyone else has been slow posting their Boston race reports, so I decided I’ll follow the trend (at least, I’ll pretend that’s why it took me so long). Here at last is my spectator’s report! After a really annoying flight on Sunday afternoon with a screaming baby behind me, I arrived in Boston in time for dinner. I was staying with my friend Adam, and to thank him, I took him out to dinner to a restaurant that’s been on my list to try for a while: Petit Robert Bistro on Comm Ave (yes, right on the marathon route). It …

Great start to the day!

I managed to do a full 30 minutes of running on the treadmill! This is a pretty big accomplishment for me. When I run outside, I can go for hours… but when I run on the treadmill, I get bored within the first half mile and have to force myself to stay on. And it was hot in the gym too so I was sweating a ton, making not giving up even more of an accomplishment. But the best part about my morning so far? My favorite bellhop at the hotel has been out for the last two weeks, and …

Ugh, it’s summer…

This is from Saturday, but I didn’t finish writing it until today. Pathetic, I know. I know people are generally more like “Ah! It’s summer!” but when you’re a winter runner who is used to running in 20-40 degree weather, anything above 60 is tough. I alluded to this last week in my Cooper River Bridge Run report, but now I’d like to go into more details. I wanted to do 18 miles. My longest run to date was 16 miles, and I walked 20 miles last weekend, so I figured it would be good to try to run 18. …

Carb loading and half marathon planning

This is my friend Charlie. He writes a column for the Daily Sun about snack foods. That article doesn’t nearly demonstrate the sheer amount of crappy foods he can eat in one sitting, but hopefully it at least gives you some idea. Maybe this will help explain why my friends aren’t always the best dieting influence on me, and I’m probably not on them either! But seriously, read that interview… it’s hysterical. And for those of you who read this blog for health tips instead of humor (I would add a “ha” there, but it’s not entirely appropriate because my …
