December Goal: Make a Home for the Holidays

This is shaping up to be an odd month for me. When I’m staffed on a client, I’m used to traveling for my job four days a week, every week. In November, I had a break from client service after wrapping up a big project and then focusing on teaching our senior associate Discover program. Afterward, it was Thanksgiving, and new projects are generally slow to start in between Thanksgiving and Christmas. However, I got staffed on a fantastic new client and have been traveling for the last two weeks. Today, though, an unexpected surprise came along: we only had …

How Much Work Is Enough Work?

This week, I’m facilitating my company’s Discover program, a reward for our newly promoted senior associates that helps with leadership development and also gives them a lot of personal coaching to help identify their individual goals and priorities. I attended Discover myself five years ago, and this is now my third time coming back as the lead “orchestrator” (basically an emcee) of the event. No matter how many times I attend the sessions, though, I always take away something new. (To read more about what I’ve learned at past Discover sessions, see here, here, here, here, and here) Yesterday, speaker Jullien Gordon talked about …

I ran into quite a few snags, and at times even abandoned the goal when I was feeling particularly stressed. I discovered that when I force myself to reply via phone, my responses tend to be very short. As any reader of this blog knows, I have a tendency to be very wordy. But I think my business correspondence already hits the right level of extra words to soften messages and make them friendlier. Forcing myself to respond immediately and via phone made …

September Goal: One-Touch Email

Reality_Show_Email_Hoarding

Originally, I had thought that my September goal was going to still be to PR in the 5K, since I had a number of setbacks in my training for my August 5K goal. But after I ended up squeaking out a two second PR on Saturday, I decided to stick with my initial 2016 plan to have a different goal each month. I’m still going to continue to train for an even faster 5K, but that’s going to be a secondary goal rather than my main focus. Last week, I began reading How To Have a Good Day, an excellent book that summarizes a ton of …
