I (k)need help

My right knee was the one hurting me during the race, and is still a bit sore now. However, my left knee is now hurting too, worse than the right one. It feels like I twisted it at some point and now I have to be very, very careful only to move the joint straight forward and back with no lateral motion, and with my foot pointing in the exact direction my knee is going. (I don’t remember ever twisting it though). I can feel it even when I’m sitting doing nothing. How did this all of a sudden become …

Patellar tendinitis?

Runner’s World’s My Knee Aches Q&A told me this:Patellar tendinitis is inflammation of one of the knee-joint tendons. Tendinitis occurs when tissue breakdown outpaces regrowth, and is caused by increased mileage, hills (especially downhills), and pace. Running through tendinitis will make it worse and prolong your recovery, says Davis. But treated early, it can heal in a few weeks. Here’s how: cross-train, ice, wear a patella strap, take anti-inflammatories, stretch, and do exercises to strengthen the joint and quadriceps, such as leg extensions. I definitely need to see a doctor and not just self-diagnose, but that sounds very close to …

Race Report: Run With the Horses

I don’t even want to write about it b/c I’m so upset about what happened. Let me cut to the chase since I already built up the suspense: basically, my marathon race turned into a 6 mile run and then a 20 mile nature walk of pain. Yes, I finished (barely), but I finished 90 minutes after I wanted to. The day started well – I had gone all-out to lay my gear out and have everything charged and ready to go. I even created a special “Run Wyoming” playlist that I was excited to run to! I woke up …

Workout and a Healthy Meal: Toasted Papaya

I just had the best workout. Did my normal routine of going from machine to machine, but this time I did mini circuits by constantly switching back and forth between the machines. I usually do three sets of 15, but today I did two machines at a time: one set of 15 on machine A, one set of 15 on machine B, then one set of 8 but at a much higher weight on machine A, likewise on B, and finishing up with sets of 15. I was shocked to see how much weight I could put on the machines …

Personal training kickoff

I just had a kickoff to personal training at my gym (to be trained, not to become a trainer. That goal totally fell by the wayside). I had no idea what to expect – I assumed she’d be putting me on a treadmill to see how fast I could go, or having me benchpress ridiculous weights to see how strong I was. Not so! Instead, she gave me this cool functional fitness thing that was really easy, but allowed her trained eye to see imbalances in my body. Here’s what I learned: My shoulder are very very narrow – I …
