Typical day in the life of a consultant

I realized this morning that it doesn’t feel like the week really started until I’ve been on a plane. Yes, for all my complaints about delayed flights and how hard the travel lifestyle can be, I missed being up in the air. Fortunately, this morning I headed back to LaGuardia and was welcomed back by the TSA with open arms (and groping hands). I guess I’m just not content without my Monday morning patdown! Today I had training all day, which was capped off with a delightful happy hour at our hotel. Delightful in large part because it was held …

Food for thought

This morning, I caught up with an old college friend for brunch. Turns out she moved to the Upper West Side and actually lives in Ex-Boyfriend’s old apartment! Small world. We had a great time at brunch, with our topics ranging from regular catchup to our thoughts on our futures and what we wanted to eventually do with our careers. One of the most interesting things we discussed was Sheryl Sandberg’s TED talk, Why We Have Too Few Woman Leaders. I had been sent this video by a lot of different people in the past week or so, but didn’t …

How Can I Motivate You?

Last night was my company holiday party. (I have no idea why it was being held in January instead of December, and it was rather unfortunate, as there wasn’t much holiday spirit to it – more like a random happy hour.) But I gorged myself on desserts nonetheless, including accepting the offer of a to-go cup of cocoa and marshmallows on my way out the door. Nice touch! Surprisingly, I didn’t indulge that much on the alcohol front – just wasn’t that appealing to me for some reason. Hopefully I’m not losing the Absolut(ly) Fit mentality… This morning, after a …

The toughest dinner to diet

Dieters always complain about how hard it is to lose weight at a buffet. Meh – been there, done that. In fact, on my cruise, I actually managed to lose a pound! Buffets do have massive quantities of food, but there a lot of tactics for dealing with those – you scope out the whole line first, figure out what’s healthiest and load up on that, and figure out the one thing you’re dying to try and have a small portion. Nay, blog readers, the buffet is the least of my troubles in consulting. I’ve written a lot about how …

Morning/Nighttime/Weekend Warriors: It’s No Use

As I continue with my ongoing battle to avoid the Consulting 15, today I came across this little gem, titled The More You Sit, The Sooner You’ll Die. Basically, whether you get in a solid chunk of exercise at the beginning or end of the day is less important than how much you sit during the day. Yikes! I need a Trek Desk, stat! I totally believe this from my own anecdotal evidence – when I was working for an airline, I only worked 40 hours/week but I didn’t do much working out (aside from weekend marathons). Now, I work …
