Maybe This’ll Be My Year

Well, this has been a big year for me career-wise. I recently got promoted, and today, my client had their big go-live. I’ve been working in Dallas for three years on this project, and it seems like just yesterday that we were introducing ourselves to the primary vendor contacts and having all-day scoping sessions at the Hilton Park Cities, deciding what all the key areas were that needed to be worked out. July 2014 seemed so far away, and it’s hard to believe that it’s finally here.

Maybe it’s the fact that I’ve only gotten five hours of sleep total since Sunday, when I started working night shifts at our Command Center. Or maybe it’s the fact that right at the critical moment of the first flight’s takeoff, I received a call to handle a security issue that had popped up. But even seeing my colleagues celebrating like crazy, it just didn’t click for me.

Go Live
Wait… we… did it?!

It all felt totally surreal, but soon after the first flights and big announcements, I headed out of the Command Center. I get to go home to Colorado for two days to catch up on sleep, and then Thursday I head back to cover the holiday weekend night shifts. In the car, I was overcome with exhaustion, so I put on some music to help keep me awake till I could get to the airport – Train’s “Maybe This’ll Be My Year.”

No more
Counting down the hours…
I stopped believin’
Although Journey told me “don’t”
Before I call it a day
Maybe this’ll be my year.

Listening to those lyrics, the magnitude of what we did hit me, and I actually started tearing up a little bit in the car. I am so proud of my entire team! We have been counting down for quite some time, but this is indeed my year in a lot of ways. I moved 1,800 miles to my absolute favorite place in the country, I got a huge promotion at work, and I just helped to successfully launch my client’s top initiative for the last few years. And we’re only halfway through 2014 – plenty of time for more excitement!

My birthday is coming up next week, and I know the next year will be full of a lot of changes. (Like the fact that I may or may not be working in Dallas anymore, depending what projects open up for me.) But I feel fantastic about the personal changes I’ve made in moving to Colorado while my client work was stable, and now I’m happy to keep things steady in Colorado while I shake things up career-wise. In consulting, it’s really rare for a project to last more than about six months or so, and I am looking forward to the challenge of a new project- whether that’s with the same awesome client where I’ve been for a while, or with a new one in a different place.

Big LUV on this big day 🙂

  1. Congrats! I’m pretty sure I know who your customer is (my industry) and now, I have the Beach Boys in my head.
