How to refuel after a double? Deck diesel!

After a grueling weekend of two marathons, you’d think I’d be ridiculously sore and barely able to walk… but that’s not the case! Monday morning I woke up with about the level of soreness I normally have after just one marathon, which was a huge improvement over how I felt Saturday morning after the brutal downhill in Salt Lake City. Still, I planned to take a rest this weekend, and what better way to do that than with a day trip to the beach? I had been wanting to do a beach day trip for quite some time, but Boyfriend …

Race Report: Deseret Morning News Marathon

Normally I’d start my race reports with the time I woke up, but this time I didn’t sleep, so I’ll just start where I left off! I got myself together for the race as quickly as possible, with the only big bummer being when I went to grab my iPod – unfortunately, it had turned itself on in my bag while in flight, and was totally out of batteries! There wasn’t time to charge it before I left, so I regretfully left my iPod and accessories (armband, headphones) at the hotel. I realized it was probably for the best anyway, …

All-Nighter Before the Race

Around 5 PM yesterday, I started getting cold feet about this whole trip. My mom was initially supposed to come to Salt Lake City with me, but she got sick early in the week and didn’t think she’d feel up to traveling. Totally understandable, but still a bummer for me. As my coworkers started to clear out of the office, it was getting quieter and quieter, and I just wanted some company and someone to talk to. I no longer wanted to go on my “big adventure” of two states and two marathons in one weekend; I just wanted to …

Night Before the Race / It’s My Birthday!

Yesterday was my birthday, and rather than throw my customary big bash with all my friends, I decided I really wanted to see what Boyfriend would plan. I realized that this could have the potential to be setting him up for disaster – if he didn’t live up to my (admittedly high) standards, I didn’t want to be upset. To protect against this, I decided that I would have no expectations for the night. Anything he did would be wonderful. If it ended up being a surprise party with my best friends (what I really wanted), that would be great; …

Drinking and Dreaming: The Night Before the Race

With this weekend’s marathon being just outside of Vegas, I thought it would be fun for Boyfriend to come along. Though we opted not to stay in a hotel on the Strip (we decided to stay at the host hotel out by Lake Mead), the host hotel had its own casino, so the idea was that we’d arrive around 9:30 PM, grab dinner, and then he could hang out at the casino while I rested up for the flight. Unfortunately, our plans got derailed a bit due to the popularity of the Vegas flights, which sold out. Now, I’ve learned …
