What I Read in January 2017

Best_Books_Of_January_2017

This was a big reading month for me. I read ten books over the course of the month, which puts me a little bit ahead on my reading challenge for this year. I’m pretty psyched for that! Since I know many of you love reading as much as I do, I wanted to share my thoughts on the books I read in January. Books are listed in descending order of the number of stars I gave them (from 5 stars to 1 star), and within each category, in the order that I read them. 4 stars: Predictably Irrational, by Dan Ariely …

2017 Monthly Goal Check In: January

small_goals_for_2017

I still feel like I’m getting used to it being January of a new year, but we’re already a month into 2017. Time is flying so far this year! This year, I set a few small goals to work on over the course of the year. My plan is to check in every month, and potentially revise some of the goals a little bit as needed, but ultimately, keep track of my ongoing progress. And so far, I’m doing pretty well. My morning routine is probably my favorite goal that I set this year: a round of 10 pushups, 20 …

My Top Books of (the second half of) 2016

Today I finished my 100th book of the year, meeting my goal! And now I’m already diving into my first book of 2017, Ann Patchett’s Commonwealth. I’m so happy to see your thoughtful comments on my top books of the first half of 2016, and that inspired me to get the second half done quickly too. Hope you enjoy these books I enjoyed between July and December! Grit: Passion, Perseverance, and the Science of Success, by Angela Duckworth. I’ve read about Duckworth’s research in many other articles and books, so I was really excited for her own book – and it …

2016_Book_Challenge_Halfway

I started writing this post in July, when we were halfway through the year – but never quite ended up finishing/posting it. But here we are in December, when all of us are trying to wrap up all those loose ends before the new year… and so the draft has resurfaced! This year, my goal was to read 100 books over the course of the year. Well, on December 29th, I’m squarely on track – about 25 pages to go in the non-fiction book I’m reading (Mindset by Carol Dweck), and I’m also halfway through a novel that is a fabulous …

Discover Video / TED Talks Book Review

I mentioned two weeks ago that I was in California to facilitate my company’s Discover program. (Here’s a post on one of the things I started pondering after this time around: how much work is too much work?) The entire event is videotaped, and last time I facilitated, I promised several friends/family who were asking that I’d share the videos. But then I got them back, and I was too embarrassed to post them. Have you ever tried to watch a recording of yourself on video? It’s uncomfortable, seeing all the things you wish you could change but having no power to do it differently …
