Vacation Recap: MidwEx Experience Camp

MidwExCamp_Bunk_10

Two weeks ago, I once again had the opportunity to spend a week volunteering with Experience Camps. Experience Camps is a nonprofit organization that organizes free one-week sleepaway camps for grieving children who have lost a parent or sibling. Last year, I volunteered at the Southern California location (CalEx); this year, I had the opportunity to help Experience Camps open a brand new camp in Michigan (MidwEx). I’ve been pretty swamped since getting back to reality, but over the weekend, I got a thank you video from ExCamps… and teared up hearing the kids say thank you directly. (Click here …

Weekend Recap: Pitkin Lake, Plane Pull, and Two Peak Traverse

Plane_Pull

Weekend of August 17-18 My Friday kicked off with a reverse commute, as I drove from Vail to Superior. I had gone up to the mountains on Wednesday, so I could hike in a new location Thursday before work and then meet my boss in Vail for dinner while he was passing through. Both were amazing! I hiked up to Pitkin Lake, a 10 mile round trip, and found the trail to be moderately undulating – which meant I got to hike some of it and run some of it. The wildflowers were absolutely stunning! I ended up finishing the …

Race Report / Weekend Recap: Frisco Trails Half and Beaver Creek Food & Wine Festival

Beaver_Creek_Cookies

Weekend of August 10-11 Before I talk about the weekend, I’d like to first write about a truly epic Thursday night. Nonprofits seem to get last minute event tickets to things all the time, but Thursday was the first time I’ve been able to take advantage of that. Our Meals on Wheels volunteer coordinator emailed everyone to say she had four tickets to Billy Joel performing at Coors Field that night, and I ended up being able to snag two of them for myself and my friend Kelli. I was psyched! We met up with my friend Heather (who already …

Weekend Recap / Race Report: Dynafit Camp Hale Half Marathon

Camp_Hale_Half_Mile_3

Weekend of July 19-21 My weekend started a little bit early – with the kickoff of Back on my Feet (BoMF) Denver at 6:30am. I first heard about BoMF years ago, when Ericka used to volunteer with them in DC. BoMF seeks to combat homelessness by first building confidence and self-esteem through weekly group runs, then enrolling participants in financial literacy classes and job skills training. I was really excited they were coming to Denver! The run was scheduled to start at Denver Rescue Mission’s Crossing facility, where I’ve spent time mentoring women in the STAR program, so I was hoping …

Race Report: Move It for the Music 5K

Visiting_Luzerne_Music_Center

Race run on July 6th, 2019 Craig had a bachelor party scheduled the weekend of July 4th, and my firm gives us all of July 4th week off – so I figured the second weekend of the break would be a great one for me to make a quick solo getaway. I always find it difficult to plan trips to other places (when I am on vacation, I just want to be home, since I travel so much for work), but by then, I would have already had eight days in Superior. As good a time as any to visit …
