Race Report: New York City Marathon (Part 1)

I woke up and checked myself out. Hangover? No. Dehydration? Yes. I commenced getting ready, chugging water as I did so. The only snag in my morning marathon routine came when I still needed to make my race shirt. I was using a pink ribbed tanktop, and trying to use a Sharpie on it, but the ribs made it very difficult to write on it. Finally, my mom held it taut, while I used short brushstrokes with the pen to form the letters. Took me 15 minutes, but SO worth it! The front: LAURA’s NYC Marathon History: Nov ’07: Inspired …

Night Before the Race: On the Road for Education Marathon

Okay, it’s redemption time. I hopped on a flight to Minneapolis this morning, where I met Maniacs John and Catherine for a 2 hour carpool down to Mason City, IA. “What’s in Mason City, IA?” you may ask? This bustling metropolis is the birthplace of Meredith Willson (composer of The Music Man), boasts a wooden door factory and a metal door factory, and also produces Kraft pudding cups. But most importantly to us, it is the host town of the On the Road for Education Marathon. We got into town around 4 PM and headed to the packet pickup, which …

The Day After I Failed

I woke up still totally depressed about the race yesterday. I was totally dreading going into work. My coworkers may not know much about marathons, but that I know that I do one or two every weekend, and they’re used to me coming in on Monday mornings and coloring in another state on the marathon map that hangs over my desk. And it’s not just my close coworkers – I’m constantly being asked about it by random passersby who see it and want to know what it is. We joke that you can tell which state I’ve done most recently …

Night Before the Amica Breakers Marathon

It all started with dinner in Rhode Island. We had gotten into Providence much earlier than anticipated, and instead of waiting 45 minutes for the beginning of the pasta dinner (presumably overpriced for the generic cafeteria-style fare they’d be serving), my mom and I decided to venture out on our own to a restaurant. Since I rarely eat carb-heavy foods except for right before a marathon, I didn’t want anything unknown; I wanted something from one of my favorite chain restaurants, like Macaroni Grill, Red Lobster, or Olive Garden. We decided to play it by ear. Our hotel was about …

Night Before the Race: Lewis and Clark Marathon

Saturday morning found me up at 4:30 AM, probably too early to even be termed morning. Actually, Boyfriend contemplated staying up all night instead of waking up to see me off, but ultimately decided to sleep. I purposely showered the night before and laid all my clothes out, so I managed to get out the door in 15 minutes – a new record for me. It helped that Boyfriend wasn’t going with me so I felt no need to put makeup on or look pretty 🙂 The subway to the airport was fairly uneventful, other than the fact that it …
