The message of New York City

A few weeks ago, I read a really fascinating essay by Paul Graham, titled Cities and Ambition. While it was written back in May 2008, I think it’s certainly still very valid today – and extremely thought-provoking. The opening lines give you a pretty good idea of the gist of the piece, so I’ll excerpt a few of them here (but highly encourage you to go read the entire thing when you have some time and are in the mood for some serious contemplation: “Great cities attract ambitious people. You can sense it when you walk around one. In a …

Healthy airline food (and wine!)

Today’s Wall Street Journal had a very interesting article highlighting the food on various airlines, and how healthy it is (or really, how unhealthy it is). I found this quote particularly telling: While most airlines had some sort of healthy offering, coach buy-on-board menus are laden with high-calorie salty foods that may be particularly bad for people who get dehydrated on long flights. Um, yeah, I’ll say! If I know I’m going to be traveling during mealtime, I try my best to get to the airport with at least a few minutes to spare. There usually isn’t a really extensive …

That true blue BFF

Lately, all my travel is really wearing on me. Earlier this year, I was in DC four days a week, and then traveling so much on weekends (Europe, woo!) that I was only home a few days a month. I thought that would cover it, but it seems that in my absence, a lot of my friends have shifted …

Random thoughts in between time zones

Well, I’m 2.5 hours away from landing in Tokyo, and I’m bright eyed and bushy tailed – not surprising that it’s only 6am Eastern Time, but unfortunately, it’s 7pm Japan time, so I need to burn some energy and get ready to go back to bed in a few hours. I keep trying to remind myself “it’s nighttime… it’s nighttime…”, so I’ll be prepared when I get off the plane, but I’m just so used to the European flights where it’s dark like this and then you land and it’s morning and you have the whole day in front of …

Pretend like I know how to say "Bon Voyage" in Japanese

Yesterday, I finally got my act together and posted a birthday weekend update. However, my lack of blog posting lately has concealed something pretty cool: my birthday gift to myself. Thanks to a great price on airfare, today I’m off to Japan for the weekend with one of my best friends! Never mind that we’re only going to be there for two days, never mind that I don’t speak any Japanese at all (though I am planning to look up a key phrase or two later this afternoon), never mind that we don’t even have a definite itinerary planned… it’s …
