Lately I seem to keep parroting the same quote: “nobody ever says they wish hadn’t run today.” But it is SO true! Yesterday, I didn’t manage to get out the door for my daily run until 11:52 PM (it counts for day 2 as long as I started before midnight, right?). I had been dreading it all day, and I came really close just skipping it. After all, I was already being an overachiever by doing two challenges instead of just one, so I could fail one of them, right? No. I am not a quitter and I am certainly not a quitter on only day 2 of 21. Sure, I had traveled; sure, I had been standing on my feet answering dumb student questions at a career fair most of the day. But if I let those be excuses, my willpower would be broken and I would allow just about anything to be an excuse. So I did it. I ran up to 86th Street and then down Broadway and over until I got to Boyfriend’s (I had warned him I was going to arrive sweaty). Though I felt somewhat silly running at midnight with a backpack on (truth be told, I felt like a criminal and I was afraid people were going to think I stole something), I felt wonderful when I arrived, and for once I didn’t fall asleep in the middle of watching TV with him. It also made me feel totally not guilty when he pulled out some Magnolia Bakery banana pudding that he had saved for me 🙂
Today, I continued the processed carb avoidance just fine, and also got in a great workout at the gym. I did 55 minutes / 5 miles on the elliptical while watching America’s Next Top Model, and then headed over to the treadmill to do my requisite one mile running minimum. 7:34 baby! The knee didn’t bother me at all on either the elliptical or the treadmill, so when I was done, I went back up to my apartment, didn’t even bother to strip out of my sweaty running clothes, and booked a flight and registered for Niagara. That’s right, I am soon going to be a REAL “cross country runner!” (I know I’ve run in Canada before, but this is my first time actually running across an international border.)
Now I just need to go buy trash bags to protect me from the forecasted rain…
Wow! You are a crazy woman…running after midnight??!!! I can barely get my booty out the door after 6:00 pm.
Great! I’ll be in touch, I think the cool temps will be good for a nice fast run. The wind will be a challenge, but heck, its a marathon, right? Getting pumped!!
yayy!! good luck this weekend!!
I’ll definitely be waitin for this race re-cap! I can’t imagine running ANY distance in the rain. But you’ll kick ass. And look stylish in a trash-bag. for suuuure.
Good luck!!!
I am so impressed with the late night run! Honestly, if I am not out of my house by seven, it’s just not happening that day. Good luck!
Good luck this weekend at the Niagra Marathon! Can’t wait to hear all about it. 🙂
Where do you go for your midnight runs???
Woohoo! You’ll be in my neck of the woods! Enjoy it:) Niagra falls is fun…and fast. And cool and awesome. And we get the pretty side of the falls!:) Have a rockin’ time. Can’t wait for the race report!
3 words…Hefty, Hefty, Hefty! (trash bag). Good Luck, Laura!!!!!!!!
wow. will someone be out there filming all this for posterity?
(someone not running and fueled by processed carbs Id imagine :))
MizFit
Way to stay with your challenge and not give up!
Now the Niagara marathon – Maybe it will only sprinkle! You never know!
Hoooray for registering! Good luck with the race!
Good for you getting out that late! I am too much of a wimp to run that late at night. Unless I have a late night soccer game, but that is indoors and with other people to motivate me. Big difference.
Saw this and thought of you.. http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2008/road.warriors/
I might start sending you things about overachivers too.
Dang! That’s some committment, girl. Nice work!!!
Holy shit !!! I am losing my track of my mind. How many marathons have you completed so far? I just lost my mind. You are amazing and I wish you lots of LUCK this weekend.
WAY TO GOOOOO!!! I have my own 21-day challenge going on but I am not blogging about it. It’s just the usual eat sensibly and be in bed early enough– but I have made it through 3 days and coming back to your blog every day reminds me YES you can do it– so thank you:) i haven’t watched any of this season of ANTM, is it any good? I miss the days of Naima or Carridee or Eva… 🙂
Oooh, that’s going to be awesome. Some day I’m running the London Marathon. It’s on my life to do list. And I’ve always wanted to go running with a backpack for some odd reason. I guess it just seems more hardcore. Granted, I imagine myself running through hills and over dirt and rocks and not through NYC, but still with a backpack strapped on.
Good luck and have a great race!
I did Niagara 2 years ago, they always expect rain … they give you rain coats in your kit bag
