Pre-Race Diet

According to Should I Carbo Load Before the Marathon: The expert physician panel at the 2005 Marathon Directors College said carbohydrate loading has been dropped by most serious marathoners. You should eat a normal diet with 60-70% carbohydrates the week before the marathon, but do not increase your total calories. That makes total sense to me, and is exactly what I was trying to do. Keep the calories fairly normal (maybe a tad bit higher than my usual daily goal), but increase the carbs just slightly (since I tend to go high-protein low-carb most days… certainly not all-out Atkins-style, but …

I really want to slap my manager right now

He keeps quoting celebrity marathon times and telling me I’m pathetic if I can’t beat them, and then he’s putting down people with “slow” times (his definition of slow is any time more than 4:30). He thinks he could do a marathon in less than 6 hours with absolutely no training. This from a guy who considers 3 miles a long run. “A 6 hour finish is about a 14 minute pace, which is like 4.3 MPH. Come on, I walk that all the time on the treadmill and I don’t get tired. That is totally pathetic that people train …

The upcoming ice cream is giving me cold feet

I started getting scared this morning when I read Julie’s comments on my post yesterday about my marathon excuses, and how the VCM can really kick your butt. Then I got an e-mail this afternoon from the race organizers: Hi Runners, We’re only a few days away from marathon weekend! You are receiving this email because you are a registered Marathoner. It goes on from there with some logistics but oh my gosh, I am a registered marathoner! What did I get myself into? If you kind of cough as you say the word “registered,” it’s even scarier. I’m starting …

Race Report: Bay to Breakers

Chris said it best when he stated “I could not really call this a race report since B2B is more about the event and less about the actual run.” Also, I probably can’t really call this a race report since I didn’t register, I didn’t once run, I didn’t get a time, and I didn’t cross the finish line. But ignoring those minor technicalities, we’ll forge onward. The night before the race, we decided to cop out and pick up sheets at Mervyn’s (which is like the California version of Sears) and make togas as costumes. Yeah, we’re pretty lame. …

Marathon Goals

Yesterday Nitmos posted about how to set your race goals. I don’t think I necessarily fit into any of those categories, but I totally agree with Viper’s comment, “I’m more of the pick-an-arbitrary-time-that-sounds-good-and-be-pissed-off-when-I-don’t-beat-it-even-if-I-PR goal setter.” Boozers unite! I’ve heard that for your first marathon, your goal should just be to finish, and you shouldn’t set any goals beyond that. Pshaw. I’m going with 4:15 as my goal. That’s a 9:44 mile, which sounds a little slow, but in my only >20 mile run, I did 9:55. I’m thinking I was not well-rested and not well-fueled when I did that, so …
