My Top 20 Books of 2015

My_Year_In_Books

Well, one thing I will fully admit I failed at this year is the Goodreads 2015 Reading Challenge. I set a goal of reading 100 books, and so far I’ve read… 59. But hey, as Goodreads has so kindly pointed out, 2015 isn’t over yet. I would guess I’ll finish the year just over 60 books, since I’m in the middle of one right now and also have a fairly short read queued up. That’s nothing to sneeze at, though I do hope to do better next year. Updated to add: I have since learned that I actually read 66 …

The Benefit of Making Resolutions (Even If You Don’t Keep Them)

Dwight_Shoot_for_the_Moon

I’ve been getting pretty excited about New Year’s, and specifically, the opportunity to set some new goals for myself. Sure, you can set goals anytime, but there’s something extra fun about the fresh start that January 1st provides. However, Amy Cuddy, the psychologist popularly known for her TED Talk on power poses, had an interesting piece on Saturday about why your New Year’s resolutions might do more harm than good. Specifically, she talks about how setting unreasonable goals can lower your self-esteem. I agree that a too-high goal can do that… but I still don’t think the shoot-for-the-moon approach is a …

Iterating on Goal Setting

San Jose Office Views

I spent today at a workshop in California along with my firm’s Human Capital leads from across the globe, and the discussions were fascinating. We’ve recently switched from a traditional performance management system, where reviews are done and goals are set just twice a year, to a new system that emphasizes real-time feedback. It’s been a huge transformation, and one that isn’t quite complete yet, but it’s definitely taking things in a positive direction. But while we’ve been …

Healthy Recipe: Turkey Shepherd’s Pie

St. Patrick's Day House Party

Remember how one of my New Year’s resolutions was to have people over at my home at least once a week? I’m not doing well with my other resolutions but that one is going strong. One of my biggest reasons for wanting to host people so often was that I hoped it would make me less uptight and more go-with-the-flow, rather than stressing out about every little detail. Well, you can’t get much more relaxed and go-with-the-flow than everyone sitting around a blanket on the floor in my new den! Even though I just closed on my house yesterday morning …

Checking In On My 2015 “Engage” Goals

Gingery-Quinoa-and-Rainbow-Lentil-Crockpot-Curry

Now that we’re about a month into 2015, it’s probably a good point for me to check in on my 2015 resolutions to engage. How am I doing so far? My first goal was to engage in learning – and I’ve pretty much been nailing my goal to “listen to a TED talk once per day.” To prove it, here’s my Excel log of the TED talks I’ve watched so far – there have only been one or two days that I’ve missed it, and I’ve usually made up for it the very next day by watching two or three …
