September Goal Check In: Week 3

What_Is_A_Management_Consultant

Can you believe it’s nearly October already?? 2016 has flown by, and it’s crazy to think there’s only one quarter left. I’m still trying to figure out what my October challenge is going to be, and part of that has been because I don’t know what my day-to-day life is going to look like. One of the stresses of consulting is that your lifestyle changes dramatically from project to project, and there isn’t usually much insight into what you’re going to be doing next. With my current project wrapping up this week, I may be working from home in Colorado …

September Goal Check In: Week 2

dilbert_walking_and_texting

Last week, I was really positive and excited about my progress in my one-touch email challenge. This week? Not so much. I ran into quite a few snags, and at times even abandoned the goal when I was feeling particularly stressed. I discovered that when I force myself to reply via phone, my responses tend to be very short. As any reader of this blog knows, I have a tendency to be very wordy. But I think my business correspondence already hits the right level of extra words to soften messages and make them friendlier. Forcing myself to respond immediately and via phone made …

Oops! But when I get to my computer and sit down, I …

September Goal: One-Touch Email

Reality_Show_Email_Hoarding

Originally, I had thought that my September goal was going to still be to PR in the 5K, since I had a number of setbacks in my training for my August 5K goal. But after I ended up squeaking out a two second PR on Saturday, I decided to stick with my initial 2016 plan to have a different goal each month. I’m still going to continue to train for an even faster 5K, but that’s going to be a secondary goal rather than my main focus. Last week, I began reading How To Have a Good Day, an excellent book that summarizes a ton of …

Getting Away from the Guilt of Email

Little_Laura_Hiking

The last week or two, I have just felt overwhelmed. I’ve definitely had too much on my plate, and it’s forced me to really start getting productive. If you need something to get done, ask a busy person, right? While ordinarily that kind of hyperfocused productivity would be a good thing (and it’s definitely paying off at work), lately it’s also come with kind of a big heaping plate of guilt at the things I’m letting slide. My personal email address, for example, has been piling up like crazy – to the point where I’m even ignoring emails from friends. …
