Weekend Recap: Independence on the Trails

Laura_Backpacking_Buffalo_Lakes

I wrote last week how I was really dreading the holiday weekend. Mostly, I think it was because I’ve been looking forward to the long break from work for weeks… but now that it was here, I was disappointed in the plans I had made. However, it ended up all turning out much better than I expected! (Hooray for low expectations!) On Thursday, I had wanted to do the Skyline Traverse – an 18.5 mile hike that covers 5774 feet of vert. It’s no joke! I’ve wanted to do this hike for years, and was hoping this would be the …

Weekend Recap: Not Alone but Lonely

Grouse_Lake_Panorama

This was supposed to be a social and fun weekend, but I ended up feeling pretty isolated and alone 🙁 My Friday kicked off in a weird way. On Tuesday, I woke up with my left eye really puffy and swollen – but not at all red or itchy. To be honest, I kind of ignored it for a few days, thinking it would go away on its own, but by Thursday evening, when it was still as swollen as ever, I realized I needed to address it before the weekend. My optometrist opened at 7am on Friday (amazing?!), so …

Weekend Recap: Mountain Visit!

Pitkin_Lake_Flowers_and_Snow

Although I worked all day Friday, my Thursday felt like the weekend, because for the first time in months, I had house guests! My boss and his family were driving from Illinois to Utah, and they stopped to stay with me on Thursday night before continuing the drive. I did my best to wrap up work early in time for their arrival, and after helping them get settled in, we did something else I haven’t done in months – went to dinner at a restaurant! It was a first for all of us to do so, and I had to …

Weekend Recap: Bad News

Dorky_Laura_Helmet_and_Mask_Horseback_Riding

This was such a rollercoaster of a weekend. My first weekend getting together with a group of friends… but also lots of bad news too 🙁 Saturday morning kicked off with a quick four mile trail run with Sugar, which I hoped would sufficiently tire her out without wearing me out too much. Then, I dove into some leftover pumpkin baked oatmeal for breakfast, since I knew I needed a lot of energy. My friends Heather and Laura and I had agreed to do the “Tour De Matt” – a metaphorical marathon of seven Peloton bike classes taught by our …

Weekend Recap: Hitting the Boulder Trails

Wildflowers_Bear_Peak_Saddle

I went into the weekend without many plans; just a hiking date on Sunday morning. But Saturday, in particular, ended up being a pretty amazing impromptu day! My morning started taking Sugar out for a trail run. My plan was to head up Rattlesnake Gulch to the Continental Divide overlook, but when I got to the trailhead, it was totally packed. I guess I will need to curse 5280 Magazine all summer for spoiling this quiet spot in their magazine… hopefully by next year everyone forgets about it! I didn’t feel like dealing with the difficulty of keeping Sugar calm …
