Blocking my Time with PTO

Short and sweet post today, but I wanted to share what a successful day I had at work. I had originally requested today as a PTO day, so that I could spend time with a visiting houseguest. I blocked off my calendar, shifted all meetings to Wednesday and Friday, and started working my butt off to ensure that I could have all the loose ends tied up and be able to take the day off. I swear, sometimes it’s easier to just keep working instead of trying to take time off! (And it should be noted that I am a …

Book Review: Executive Presence by Sylvia Ann Hewlett

Laura_At_New_Manager_Training

Since my company’s fiscal year runs from July to June, this is the time of year that everyone gets nervous about promotions and performance reviews. I’m not up for promotion this year, since I received a big promotion last year and am still developing at my current level. However, I obviously still want to get good news when I have my performance review conversation this week, and I’ve worked hard this year to make sure that will happen. My Energy Audit: Making Great Strides!

Energy Audit

I know it’s only Wednesday, but wow, what an amazing week so far! I’m out in sunny California to observe a training program that all our senior associates go through shortly after promotion, and preparing to potentially take on a part-time role helping to deliver the program in the future. Fingers crossed that I get the role, as it’s one I’m really passionate about! The “Discover Program” is all about exploring yourself and your values to be able to make more effective choices about your life and your career. It’s a lot of self-discovery, leadership development exercises, and tips on …

Iterating on Goal Setting

San Jose Office Views

I spent today at a workshop in California along with my firm’s Human Capital leads from across the globe, and the discussions were fascinating. One of the topics we talked about at length was performance management, and how best to encourage staff to maximize their performance. We’ve recently switched from a traditional performance management system, where reviews are done and goals are set just twice a year, to a new system that emphasizes real-time feedback. It’s been a huge transformation, and one that isn’t quite complete yet, but it’s definitely taking things in a positive direction. But while we’ve been …
