If It’s Worth It, Make It Work

Tonight, I went out for happy hour with a friend who’s thinking of switching jobs, and who wanted to hear a little bit more about my company. I was completely transparent and told him both the good and the bad. No matter how great your company is, there will be some things about it that don’t work for everyone, and I think it’s better to be up front about that than have someone be surprised once they start working there. But just because there are some negatives doesn’t mean that a job isn’t a good fit – it’s more whether those negatives …

Happiness Without Perfection

Discover_Orchestration_Day_1

Yesterday morning, I read a great post by Leo Babauta over at Zen Habits, The Truth About Your Uncertain Life Path & Purpose. It echos a point I’ve always known: that no one has it all figured out, and we are all just trying to do the best that we can. Leo says, “Do you think they have it all figured out? Do you think they have certainty and a feeling of reaching perfection? Not a chance. There is not one of us alive, not me or anyone else, who ever feels certainty about their purpose or path. Since coming back to my client in Dallas, things have definitely changed. When …

Why is hiking so different from stair climbing?

Not sure if I’ve posted about this before, but I bought a Fitbit Charge HR about a month ago, thanks to my new team in Dallas. They pretty much all wear Fitbits, and they have “Work Week Hustle” challenges every week to see who can get the most steps in Monday through Friday. I have to admit, I haven’t paid much attention to the leaderboard (last week I won and didn’t even realize it till after the fact?) – though I think part of that is that I’ve been traveling and haven’t been sitting in the office with the team much. However, …

Driving Toward No Goal At All

Laura_Realization_Point

One of the speakers I’ve had the pleasure of sharing the stage with at Discover is Jullien Gordon, a professional career coach and speaker who’s been featured in Forbes and Under 30 CEO. Jullien has some great lessons on developing your personal definition of success and going after what you want, rather than copying someone else’s definition of success – which may or may not make you happy. When I went through the Discover program a few years ago, Jullien’s message really resonated with me. Even though I was doing things seemingly for myself at the time, I realized that I was actually doing things …
