What I Read in October 2018

During the final month of my campaign, I hardly read at all. But in the interest of continuity, I’ll still do a quick review of the four books I read last month. (That puts me 27 books behind my goal to read 100 books this year; I’m currently at 60 total.)

Run for Something was very practical for my campaign (I just wish I had read it sooner!), and The Towering Sky was a nice light novel to escape the real world pressure 🙂

5 stars:

Run for Something: A Real-Talk Guide to Fixing the System Yourself, by Amanda Litman : Loved this fast-paced no-nonsense guide; I wish I had found it earlier in my own campaign! Many of the tactics weren’t applicable to my small race, but were insightful nonetheless. Highly recommend this to anyone who’s frustrated with our government – it has some great rationale around why you should run for a local office, and how it’s not as difficult as you think.

The Towering Sky, by Katharine McGee: Loved this final book in the trilogy! The author did a great job providing enough background to catch me up on what happened before (which is a common pitfall in many series books), but didn’t rehash everything. The story was fast-paced and I stayed up all night to finish!

4 stars:

The Power, by Naomi Alderman: This was a really interesting dystopian book about a world where females have all the power rather than males. The later chapters get very violent and savage, and it’s horrifying… until you realize that it’s (almost) all based on what actually happens/has happened with men in power. Thought-provoking, for sure.

1 stars:

It’s Not Okay: Turning Heartbreak into Happily Never After, by Andi Dorfman: This was really trite and shallow, and had a lot of advice that I consider to be just plain stupid. I kept reading in order to get tidbits on Bachelor gossip, but the self-help theme was really inane. I was also thoroughly annoyed by how Andi wouldn’t use anyone’s real names (and used nicknames instead), which forced me to look up winners / exes / etc on Wikipedia instead of just knowing who she was talking about. I wish I hadn’t wasted any of my time reading this.
