What I Read in July 2018

Only five books read in July, and three of them were in the last week – yikes! I’m currently 12 books behind on my goal of reading 100 books in 2018 🙁 I need to step up my reading and make more time for it, but it hasn’t been a priority lately.

I gave five stars to Deena Kastor’s Let Your Mind Run, and four stars to Sarah Pekkanen’s The Ever After.

5 stars:

Let Your Mind Run: A Memoir of Thinking My Way to Victory, by Deena Kastor: This was fascinating – a great blend of biography along with practical tips to cultivate a more positive mindset. I found myself highlighting several quotes as I was reading (something I rarely do). Highly recommend this book to anyone who even dabbles in running!

4 stars:

The Ever After, by Sarah Pekkanen: I loved all of Pekkanen’s early books, but as she’s moved into the thriller category, haven’t been quite as impressed. This one wasn’t a thriller and was back to her more usual genre, but it wasn’t quite as impactful as some others. It was still a really good read, about a wife who catches her husband cheating and then has to figure out whether to stay or go, and I cried several times throughout – Pekkanen did a great job letting the reader feel the indecision Josie was faced with.

3 stars:

The Endless Beach, by Jenny Colgan: I normally love Jenny Colgan’s books, but this one missed the mark for me a bit. I found the Scottish names / dialects hard to follow at times, and I constantly felt like I was missing some sort of backstory. (Come to find out it’s the second in a series, which I hadn’t realized, so that was partially on me.) But even without that, there were a lot of storylines and I would have preferred more of a focus on one or two.

The French Girl, by Lexie Elliott: By the end, I really liked this book and was invested in hearing what would happen. However, the pace was really slow, and it took a while for me to get into it. Overall, a decent story, but the plot could have moved a lot faster.

2 stars:

The Master, by Kresley Cole: I thought this was a standard beach read, but this was a LOT racier than I expected. Basically Fifty Shades of Gray, though with possibly even more sex. I guess maybe it’s my fault for not knowing what I was getting into, but I would not recommend this.
