The bad news is, there’s no recording/podcast/etc of this morning’s radio show. The good news is, it was awesome! The Zoo Crew was really easy to talk to and SO much fun. I had an absolute blast talking about using ice cream as motivation, wearing my Dunder Mifflin t-shirt when I ran my Pennsylvania race in Scranton, and getting champagne sprayed all over me at my 50 states finish 🙂 It seems like they were pretty happy with my performance too, as they said they’ll be in touch about having me back on again. Cool!
Now before I get to the most amazing news of all, a little backstory. There is a huge annual charity event called Thon at Penn State. It’s the largest student-run philanthropy in the world, and takes the form of a 24 hour dance marathon that raises money to fight pediatric cancer. I visited Penn State when I was applying to colleges, and was lucky enough to be there during Thon weekend and get to check it out. It was such an amazing sight and I still haven’t forgotten it… all these students (700 dancers last year) out there in the gym, dancing away, while each one had an entire support team of “Moralers” (15,000 volunteers!) to keep them going. Meanwhile, they had inspirational announcements and discussions as well as visits from kids who were taking a break from their hospital stays to how their support! It brings tears to my eyes to even think about it… such an amazing event.
And the coolest part about my time on the air today? B94.5 wants to bring me down to State College and maybe get a marathon going to tie in with Thon and raise more money for the kids! I would absolutely love that idea. After so many marathons, I have a lot of ideas about what makes one good, and I’d love to try my hand at putting one together. Furthermore, I was always kicking myself for not embarking on my marathon quest with some sort of charity to benefit (I just ran out of time to get that all set up!), so this would be an incredible way to give back. Long before I started doing marathons, I did Relay for Life, which supports the American Cancer Society. This is a cause that’s very near and dear to my heart, and I am so in love with this idea – I totally want to make it happen. I think THIS is exactly what I’ve been waiting for as my next big thing. I want to make a difference! Now let’s see what they say when we talk later this week…
That would be an awesome opportunity!
I am so impressed by your back-to-back marathons. I can’t even imagine doing 2 marathons in 48 hours, hehe. You’re awesome!
Ok, I’m way behind, BUT if there’s anything I can do to help with a THON marathon – let me know!! I’m so far out here in AZ that it’s not easy to get back for THON itself, but I try to be as involved as I can. (I was a group THON chair for 3 years and a dancer in 2007 – I there are still songs from that weekend that I can’t listen to without breaking into tears!)
Also, I can’t say congrats enough on the 50 states 🙂
