Soaking up the sun and dissolving the stress

What a blast I had in Cancun this weekend! My old roommate, Kelly, is in Chicago now getting her MBA at Kellogg, so I rarely see her anymore. To remedy that, we decided to plan a girls’ getaway in February… but then pushed it up to this weekend. With only 48 hours in Cancun, we were a bit crunched for time – but made the most of it and had an absolutely fabulous time. Our shared opinion at the end was that weekend trips are just the perfect length of time to relax and rejuvenate before heading back to the …

Creating a quality gym experience

This morning, a friend called my attention to yesterday’s New York Times article Full Service Gyms Feel a Bit Flabby. The article bemoans the loss of what it calls “full service gyms,” where people would hang out before and after working out and have more of a connection than today’s “get in and get out” approach to working out. While Carlos said he doesn’t care because he doesn’t want to use the gym as a pickup spot anyway, I had a slightly different reaction to the article. To Travel or Not to Travel?

Yesterday was a bit of a crazy weather day in DC – hope you all are doing okay wherever you are. Mid-morning, the snow started coming down, and the forecast was just terrible. We were lucky enough to get a cab back to the hotel (where we …

Jetsetting again!

While I’ve always been fascinated by travel and the airline industry, this week I picked up a new skill as part of a new hobby: learning how to specify advanced fare routings as part of my searches on ITA. While this may seem totally geeky and useless to anyone who’s not a travel agent, it’s actually quite helpful and lucrative, in that it helps me find so-called “mistake fares” and exploit routing loopholes that allow me to book trips at very inexpensive prices. For example, if you look at the advanced fare rules and the list of taxes and fees …

Resetting my sleep schedule

This weekend was pretty crazy in terms of disrupting my sleeping patterns, and of course Sunday nights are never easy, given that I have to be up by 5:30am to catch my flight. I didn’t even get home from skiing until about 6pm on Sunday, so that was only about 12 hours that I was in New York! And yet, I won’t be home again for another two weeks… such is the traveling consultant’s life when I alt-travel to fun destinations so much. My New Year’s resolution to go for a minimum of 7 hours of sleep per night (with …
